The god of this age has blinded the minds of unbelievers, so that they cannot see the light of the gospel that displays the glory of Christ, who is the image of God. For what we preach is not ourselves, but Jesus Christ as Lord, and ourselves as your servants for Jesus’ sake. For God, who said, “Let light shine out of darkness,” made His light shine in our hearts to give us the light of the knowledge of God’s glory displayed in the face of Christ. But we have this treasure in jars of clay to show that this all-surpassing power is from God and not from us.
2 Corinthians 4:5-7 NIV
Have nothing to do with the fruitless deeds of darkness, but rather expose them. It is shameful even to mention what the disobedient do in secret. But everything exposed by the light becomes visible – and everything that is illuminated, becomes a light. This is why it is said: “Wake up, sleeper, rise from the dead, and Christ will shine on you.”
Ephesians 5:11-14 NIV
One of my favorite parts of recovery or 12 step programs is the instruction to those in recovery that when they share, they are only to share their experience, strength, and hope. It is their personal revelation of who Jesus is to them and what He’s brought them through. What a beautiful way of sharing your faith! My favorite expression of evangelism, though, is when Tom Crandall talks about burning for Jesus, how at his own conversion, the person sharing their faith with him burned for Jesus in front of Tom. That’s the best and most concise description of evangelism I’ve ever heard, but I feel like burning for Jesus is more than that.
Bill Johnson talks about the way anointing is accessed through revelation in his book “Dreaming with God”. He says that “ Revelation gives us access to the realms of greater anointing available to us to make that truth a personal experience and lifestyle.” This was a powerful revelation to me because around the same time, I could feel the pull of the Spirit to look up lamps in scripture. My conclusion of that small study is that we are all called to be lamps.
When I think of a lamp, I think of the old hurricane lamps that my wife has around the house. She’s inherited them from some beloved individuals that have passed on. The way these work is there is a reservoir that holds the oil. A wick is set in the reservoir and fed through an adjustment mechanism that changes how much of the wick is exposed. This exposure of the wick will lessen or intensify the flame by adjusting how much oil is brought to the globe to be consumed by fire. The Globe is where the light shines from. We as lamps are to draw out the anointing from the reservoir of Jesus through the wick of revelation by the Holy Spirit and burn for Him!
We are NOT called to be a lamp on some pedestal in the corner of a room, dimly lit to enhance the mood, giving darkness a place of importance, usefulness, and even honor. We are called to illuminate the darkness. We are called to illuminate every path and road, to illuminate every room and hall. We are called to the furthest reaches and the closeness of our own homes. We are called to illuminate every nook and cranny so that there is no dark corner left for shame and guilt to hide. We are called to burn.
So, fellow students, fellow revivalists, fellow Christians, fellow people of the Way, fellow members of the brotherhood of the burning heart, fellow men and women of God who have been given power and authority through the sacrifice and resurrection of the Spotless Lamb, Jesus Christ, LET US BURN.
